Michigan Authorities Seize Unusually Large Amount of Fentanyl

Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid drug that doctors prescribe fairly frequently to relieve pain. However, the prescription and use of fentanyl is under tight controls in Michigan because of its potential for abuse. Fentanyl is so potent that an overdose can result from exposure to just a very small amount. Therefore, it can be dangerous when taken or handled incorrectly.

A 23-year-old man from California is in a Michigan jail following his arrest on pending drug charges. Last Thursday, authorities stopped his vehicle on Interstate 94 in Van Buren County. There were reportedly several indicators of criminal activity that authorities observed, but no more specific details are available. After receiving the driver’s consent to search the vehicle, they found a package of drugs hidden inside that reportedly contained three kilograms of fentanyl. That is enough to make three million doses, according to law enforcement.

Authorities report alarm at the relatively large amount of fentanyl seized during the traffic stop. They report that it is atypical of their day-to-day operations. Fentanyl is 50 to 100 times more potent than morphine, although the two opioid drugs are similar to one another.

A Californian woman of undisclosed age was also in the vehicle at the time of the traffic stop. Law enforcement released her after she gave them a statement. Authorities have not yet formally charged the driver of the vehicle with a crime. Nevertheless, those facing drug charges in Michigan may wish to discuss the case with a defense attorney experienced in cases involving alleged drug crimes. If convicted, the penalties can be severe.
