Is Gun Violence Related to Domestic Abuse?

On Behalf of | Aug 26, 2019 | Firm News

Mass shootings are becoming a common occurrence that everyone wants to end. Many people in Michigan and across the country argue about how to fix the problem. According to NBC News, there may be something worth looking into when it comes to domestic abuse and gun violence. Experts say studies show domestic violence is a risk factor for future gun violence.

A recent example is the shooting in Dayton, Ohio. That shooter had a long history of violent tendencies. Particularly, he often advocated for violence against women. He had created hit lists when in high school as well. Ex-girlfriends talk about alarming behavior that included stalking other women. He had also made threats to women before.

All of this was known information to those close to him, but nobody had any idea of what to do about it. They only knew that he had the potential to be violent. This type of information often comes out about mass shooters, but there is nothing in place to allow people to alert authorities of concerns. It may not even be possible to do so without infringing civil rights. If someone only talks of violence, then it may be very hard to do anything about it.

However, someone who has a criminal history or recorded history of some type showing violent tendencies is a situation that could be helpful. Restrictions or monitoring could help prevent them from acting on those violent tendencies. It is something to think about as the country tries desperately to figure out how to stop mass shootings. This information is for education and is not legal advice.
